hacking computerThe security team that is in charge of next-generation DVDs says that it has corrected a leak that would allow hackers to discover keys to unlock movies on HD DVD and Blu-ray. DRM (digital rights management) is supposed to prevent the copying of movies, but hackers late last year found computer code on PC based DVD players that unlocked that protection.

The group has developed Advance Access Content System which deactivates those keys and provides them with a new set. These will be included on new systems while older ones will be allowed to download a free patch. Those who decide not to comply will no longer be able to watch DVDs. Stand alone players will not be affected by the news for so far, if there are any leaks in that system, they have yet to be

caught

discovered.

JoostBack in January, we told you all about Joost, free Internet TV geared to the masses. Now in Beta testing, Braindead, Alliance Atlantis Sci-Fi, Gamestar TV, Bridezillas, Warner Bros. Records, and World Poker Tour are all accessible on Joost, with more channels being added every day. There is also chat, IM, and searching capabilities. Imagine our excitement when we received this e-mail:

“The waiting’s over! Since we received your application to join the Joost beta test program, we’ve been very busy fine-tuning it for you. So here’s some good news: we’re now ready to expand our beta test program, and we’re delighted to invite you to join us.”
Now imagine our dismay when we realized that some of our computers are just too ancient to handle the technology. (We can’t all have Pentium 4 or Mac OS X 10.4.) We tried anyway, but our feeble device only gave us a white screen. We swear we heard a slight moan of defeat coming out of it. Check with Joost if you would like to join in on their action.

Star Wars Stamps

We didn’t know this, but apparently Star Wars fans are in need of even more things to collect! Luckily for them, the US Postal Service is releasing a poster-like sheet of 15 Star Wars stamps on May 25 (the stamps will not be available individually.) The 41-cent stamps—the new price goes into effect May 14—commemorates the 30th Anniversary of Lucas’ classic, and will feature the series’ most popular characters, from Darth Vader to the enigmatic Boba Fett. Even the Millennium Falcon gets some love! Fans will even get to vote for their favorite stamp at the appropriately-named www.uspsjedimaster.com, and the top vote-getter will be released as an individual stamp later this year. Sadly for Billy Dee Williams fans, there’s no Lando Calrissian stamp.

Dony Permedi’s animated video “Kiwi!” has won one of 7 of what we at Gear Live refer to as “Tubey” awards. Announced today, it joins other winners “OK Go’s” music video, “Ask a Ninja,” Terra Naomi’s “Say It’s Possible,” a vlogger known as “the winekone,” Australian Juan Mann’s “Free Hugs Campaign,” and Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, also known as “Smosh.” Jamie Byrne, head of product marketing, sees the competition as a way of rewarding the creativity on its site.

If you missed any of them or would like to see the other finalists, hang out at YouTube for a bit. Gear Live would like to congratulate all the winners as well as the runners up on behalf of vloggers everywhere.

DescriptionIt’s not as inventive at the Beer-tossing Fridge, but you Simpson fans should dig it. Put the 26 cm talking Homer Fridge Magnet up and be harassed with every Duff you open. He issues such creative comments as:

“Hey, excuse me, but I’ve noticed you’ve fallen behind in your drinking.”
“That better not be the last one ‘cos I’m still thirsty!”
“Hey buddy…mind if I lick that cap?”

We’re surprised that it doesn’t also say, “Don’t forget that the ‘Simpsons Movie’ will be out this summer.” Homer’s head is available online at Gadgets.dk for DKK 259,000 (~US $46.00.)

Apple TV

It’s not exactly

mid-March, but it’s close enough. Apple has finally started shipping its Apple TV from its iStore. With a 40 GB hard drive that will store up to 50 hours of video, 25,000 photos, and 9,000 tunes, it has a hi-def 720p output. Standard features include HDMI, component video, analog, and optical audio ports and it is compatible with both PC and Mac.

The iStore now carries over 400 movies, 350 TV shows, 4 million songs, 100,000 podcasts, 5,000 music videos, and 20,000 audio books. Even with all that accessible media, at a price of $299.00 we think we will just wait for the early reviews before we place our orders.

A friend of ours sent us this video, taking a look at the history of storing media, starting from the old-school film strip. You know…those huge reels you used to watch Martin Luther King, Jr. videos on in elementary school back in the day? While the video is simple, we figure it’s an intresting look at the evolution of storing media. Check it out for a look how to create your 21st Century Shoebox.

iLuv i182There are lots of things to love about the iLuv i182, such as its cute-as-a-button name and sleek black design. What does it do? It’s a dock for your iPod or PSP that connects to a source via an S-Video port, and records audio or video straight to your iPod or PSP’s hard drive. No more converting! But what if you left your PSP at your brother-in-law’s? The iLuv comes with an attachable SD and MemoryStick card reader so you can still record audio/video for later use. The iLuv can even be set to stop recording at a specified time. This way, you can record the gripping season finale of “Shooting Sizemore”—while you’re out retrieving your PSP from said brother-in-law. The iLuv records at 640x480 pixel resolution for iPods and 720x480 for the PSP and other video devices.  The iLuv will be available this month for $229 USD.
